Poker Camp, Baden, Austria, May 2006

I had been to Baden once before, and Austria is one of my favorite countries to vacation in, so the venue really appealed to me. We stayed at Schloss-Weikersdorf which was walking distance to Casino Baden .

Many attendees from North America won seats through events at a local casino (particularly Oregon). I was one of the few fish that paid his way.

Poker camp was a great experience and fun to attend. The teaching content was more basic than I expected, suffering from what seemed to be a "least-common-denominator" approach to accomodate all attendees. By far the greatest value was playing with pros and having the option to expose your cards for comment. Each pro was extremely intelligent and articulate. I learned the most from online SnG specialist Thomas Bihl from Germany. I came with a notebook of hand scenarios and he was kind enough to go through them with me.

This was also the venue of my first MTT ITM finish, although I know now that I played horribly near the bubble. The overall quality of play was quite good at both the MTT and SNG tournaments. I was too old and tired to stay up through the night playing ring games, but many attendees chose to do so.
