Recap December 2007

Upcoming Live Venues
I plan to visit Showboat on 11 January 2008
I plan to play a family/friend annual New Year's tournament on 5 January 2008.

12/30/2007
3/45 ITM

12/29/2007
7/19 my QT board TT3xx loses to 33, then my QQ loses to 77

12/28/2007
5/18 bubble. pokerstars is such a waste of time. unbelievably frustrating.

12/25/2007
3/9 ITM
6/18 ITM
3/18 ITM
2/45 ITM
30/45 792/1301 KK loses to 9To, played poorly by me due to multi-tabling.

12/22 - 12/23
Just one ITM finish out of six tries.

As 2007 comes to a close, I still have unrealized goals of winning a 45 SnG (I have six second-place finishes) and I still have not made the final table of an online MTT. No one has volunteered to be an online mentor, but my game has vastly improved from reading hand analyses. My goal for the coming year is to continue to think about hands and situations. And of course, I aim to take down the Conshohocken Classic.

12/12/07
busted 2 MTTs
14/510 ITM my highest online MTT finish to date. played well, got lucky and unlucky.
Lucky: while changing the screen background, I accidentally called an all in with junk, but hit the river to double up.
Lucky: ran TT into AK board AxxxT
Unlucky: did not get any action on AA,KK,QQ - missed opportunities to really add to my stack.

12/13/2007
1/18 ITM for a token.
2/45 ITM had chip lead from hand #1 but some bad beats crippled me. regained lead at 6 when 99 holds up to KQo. gain a 3:1 lead heads up, but my A8s loses to TT, my AA loses to K8, and A6 loses to K6o. A good night but this should have been the win that has eluded me for so long.

12/14/2007
1/9 ITM
2/45 ITM (still no win!)
i guess this means i'm "running good"?!?

12/16/2007
6/9 ran AK into AA and lost
96/204 5 card draw (limit): my strategy is to play JJ+ and play it hard. was 9th about a quarter through, but showed down to some quality hands. at first break i'm avg stack but blinds are high.
6/9 3 big bad beats. honestly, it's why i really hate PS. while it is true that a donkey will lose in the long run, however, at a full table of donkeys, collectively they will beat you all day long. i should have just soaked in the hot tub instead of subjecting myself to this garbage. life is too short.

note to self: if you don't feel like playing, then DON'T. that's it for this week, until Showboat Friday. i want to go in rested and not tilting. i want to final table and cash out.

Hoping to play a number of SnGs this week in preparation for the Home Game Dec 10. I'll also be analyzing a good number of hands in some forums.

12/1
ITM 2/9 and busted another SnG.

12/2
ITM 2/9: huge chip lead but AK fell to AA.
Busted two other SnGs: flop literally missed every hand I played.

12/4
Solidified plans for 12/10/07 Main Line Poker Club Home Game.
Firmed up plans for 12/21/07 Showboat, Atlantic City tournament. I have not had success at Borgata, so I'm returning to Showboat, venue of my only ITM tourney finish. Should be a good time - at least two home-game buddies will be there.

12/6 hoping to play online tonight - railbirds wanted.
busted 9/18 but played extremely well among top players (according to stat sites).
busted 25/27 someone hit a flush on river, should have bet the flop heavier.
busted 7/9 horrible bad beat A6 beat my AT board T6xx6.

This is obviously NOT the kind of momentum I want to be bringing into the home game next week. Apart from a single hand which I know I played poorly, I don't think I played anything too badly. But if that were truly the case, there should have been an ITM finish tonight.

12/7
7/45 bubble. one CANNOT win these things if dominating hands don't hold up at the final table. in honor of Chip Reese, i'm not gonna get angry, but i'm not too happy either!
1. my AK vs AQ splits the pot with two pair on board.
2. my 99 loses to AK to cripple me.
3. all in with Ax loses to 99 (how ironic).

11/45 run smack into AA with high pair and OESD.

ITM 2/18 for a token.

ITM 2/45 my 66 loses to ATo. still no wins at the 45 MTT.

This will have to do until the home game. I'm tired and need to rest.

Showboat 21 December 2007

Main Line Poker Club regulars continue to make strong finishes at the Atlantic City venues. Today, W.E. (center) chopped first place (down to 3) at the Showboat A.M. tournament. A long over-due win and well deserved!

Not satisfied with a tournament victory, W.E. aspires to the local hoagie shop's wall of fame.

I Busted 16/71. At 8bb ran 99 into AK board xQJxT. Played well, no regrets. A fun day, what poker should really be. For our victory celebration, W.E. treated me to an awesome sub (hoagie) at the WhiteHouse. Both the meatball parm and the "regular" exceeded expectations.

I had trouble texting stack updates to the blog. Didn't understand the error, but when I checked later that night, they posted fine.

Played 200NL prior at the Taj and was down due to KJ to KQ blind vs blind. Wanted to shower after leaving that slime pit, but a thorough hand-washing sufficed.

Played 200NL following and did ok at a very aggressive table with many regulars.

Note to the whiney young kid sitting two to my left:
1. never play poker with your girlfriend sitting in back of you. she deserves better than to watch you play cards, and your ego will interfere with your thinking and playing, as you try to impress her with your studliness.
2. stop playing Ace-rag and then whining when people catch up.
3. stop limping and then complaining when your monsters are overtaken.

MTT Casino Preparation

I'm on forced absence from online play to induce rest and prevent tilting before Friday's Showboat tournament. Here are some personal thoughts about my preparation and outlook for casino MTTs.

The biggest issue for me is SLEEP. Getting out is such an occasion that I'm often too anxious to sleep the night before. Compounded with habitual interrupted sleep due to young children, I'm basically doomed when confronted with the long drive and strenuous day. Consequently I like to soak in my hot tub the nights leading up to the big event, and get to bed early.

On the days preceding, I will often play online, read, study hand histories, or some combination of the three.

I'm not in any way superstitious, so I don't wear or do anything out of the ordinary. I do like to be comfortable, so it's jeans and sneakers, maybe a new pair of socks for ultimate comfort.

On the drive down, to clear my head, I like to listen to comedy. Lately my comedian of choice is Brian Regan. Laughing is a great way to relax.

On site, I like to get the registration out of the way. After a long, arduous drive, I don't want to get shut out. I also have a good breakfast, since not all casinos allow food on the playing floor.

I've had poor success playing ring games prior to a tournament. Occasionally I'll play 200NL, but otherwise I'm happy to wait for the tournament to begin.

I don't wear sunglasses or listen to music. I don't wear a baseball cap or baggy pants. I don't wear bling bling and I can't do chip tricks. I don't use a card protector, but my favorite would have to be that of fellow homey J.S. who uses a Pooping Pope , a popular Spanish caganer.

I'm not a coffee drinker, so I get my caffeine boost from an energy drink (sugarless RockStar) and hot tea (Earl Grey) throughout the tournament. I'll usually take advantage of a $1 Heineken. My metabolism doesn't afford me the opportunity to not eat for long periods of time, so I pack some snack bars or fruit.

During breaks I try to email or blog chip stacks for my homeys that are railing via the internet.

After I bust I like to play SnGs or 200NL.

2007 Main Line Poker Club

December 10 2007

Just a few take-aways from tonight's session, which I will not discuss openly here, as each of my homeys wants to win as badly as I do. I'll try to incorporate my observations into the next session, as I'm sure they will as well. Simply put, there just isn't any room for mistakes in an aggressively structured SnG.
.
One key hand from game #1: At bubble, UTG raises 3xBB. Based on prior hand and his speech during his raise, I place him on a middle pair. In UTG+1 I pick up AQo. Thinking it's a race, I use ICM to fold (don't want to spew my equity to the players sitting out), but proponents of "play for the win" would argue for a shove. He shows A9o and wins the hand - the AQo would have held for a commanding CL. I finish ITM 3/8.
.
One key hand from game #2: Down to 5, EP shoves. My range for EP is a probable Ax, as high as 44+ and as low as KTo. Having EP covered, I RRAI with ATo. LP has me covered by merely t300 and goes into tank. He eventually calls both all-ins with a monster J9s. He's crushed by EP's KTo, and I don't understand why he didn't read my RRAI for strength. IMO he should not have made his stand with such strength ahead of him. He hit the flush on the river to bust the two of us.

I don't quite recover mentally from that beat and in game #3 I play poorly. One steal attemp blows up as I encounter KK, and I eventually shove A2 into JJ and bust.
.
Game #1 1) S.H. 2) M.B. 3) R.W.
Game #2 1&2) S.L. & S.H. 3) B.D.
Game #3 1) M.B. 2) A.R. 3) W.E.
.
Looking forward to building on my recent success online, and very much looking forward to the Showboat tourney later this month.

November 19 2007

I arrived tired and late, but ready to play. I.B. arrived tired but on time, after an excruciating all-nighter at Atlantic City. We were mystified about the last-minute absence of squasher, our scheduled host. He has been crushing both small and large online MTTs - maybe we're just chump change to him anymore.

The Conshocken Classic has been moved to February 16. None of my homeys agreed to be interviewed as part of the pre-tournament hoopla, obviously protecting their preparation and strategy ideas before the big event. J.S. did mention in passing that he is eating oat bran and doing Kegel exercises to prepare, both of which forecast a loose-aggressive style IMO.

The key hand for me in game #1 was picking up wired 44 in LP. Short-stacked S.H. raised 2xBB UTG and was called by visiting N.L. immediately to my right. I sensed weakness and felt for sure I could get better than a combined 8:1 return if I hit my set. I put one of them on Ax. I get my dream flop 2hAd4d. S.H. shoves his ATo, N.L. calls, and I reraise all in with my set. N.L. calls and shows KdTd. I'm 75% to win but the turn 9d completes his flush, and I fail to fill up on the river and bust out. The Bad Beat Award, originally created in my honor, goes home with me once again.

Sitting out in these home games is dreadful. I never really recovered from that beat although I managed to sqeak out a 3rd place in game #3. Just one key hand worth mentioning in game #3: with I.B. super short stacked all in for 275, there are two limpers ahead of me. I pick up wired 88 and act on the weakness by shoving. Limpers fold and I take a nice pot which lasts to ITM. Here my end-game falls apart once again and I bust.

Results

Game#1 1)F.B. 2)N.L. 3)M.B.
Game#2 1)S.H. 2)J.S. 3)I.B.

Game#3 1/2)M.B & J.S 3)R.W.

October 29 2007

Home game tonight! Homeys beware - I am coming ready to play! We have I.B. returning from his vacation in France. T.R. continues to crush this game. My nemesis S.L. will surely be coming with his usual bag of tricks. I'm sure "Action S.H." wants to get back on track. J.S and M.B have been killing ring games and always play tough in tournament play. W.E. treated me to lunch even though he's between jobs - I think he's planning on busting me out. The Packers are playing MNF, so I won't be dreading being sent to the losers' lounge. Seems like a chance to take on greater risk since busting out is no problem!
.
Standard disclaimer: my memory is fast failing me, so it's up to the homeys to correct me in the comment section.
.
The first game got off with some fireworks. A young rising star left an action-packed online game to join us for some tournament play. Although we usually do not play with more than 8, he seemed like easy money, so we let him in. His hyper aggressive style was apparent from the start, as he pushed all-in nearly every hand. However our host very astutely observed that he was using non-sanctioned chips. The tournament chips in use for this night were red and black, but his were green. He was asked to leave, but would not go willingly - the host had to physically carry him from the room under much protest. We do not know what ultimately happened to him. Some suspect he returned to his online game, while others feel he grabbed some milk and cookies with his au pair and was put to bed. I have often said that our game is the best on the Main Line, and very difficult to get into.
.
Game #1
The first orbit saw an amazing four (4) diamond flushes. On one such hand, I.B. opens from MP at 3.5BB. I raise with TdJd and it folds to him and calls. Flop comes three diamonds. Based on the betting, I put him on Adx, so I felt I was good on the flop but vulnerable to a higher flush. The turn comes another diamond, and I throw caution to the wind and shove. He shows AdQd to bust me out. The guy drives 3+ hours to play this game, so I don't know what I was thinking. Shoving the turn was just foolish given my estimate of his hand. Granted I wanted to watch the Packer game, but I still had an hour to go. But what about those four diamond flushes in the very first orbit? Could both decks be rigged? I hope not - they were my cards! A fifth diamond flush fell shortly thereafter. Very strange. As they say, that's poker.
.
Game #2
I don't remember much about game #2. In what seemed to be a departure from his usual trappy style, W.E. came out firing, apparently off some fresh advice from WSOP hopeful and Capitol Hill player Jim Craig. He seemed to be playing with more confidence, possibly due to his new iPhone. The guys used to admire my Samsung Blackjack, but tonight all hands were on the iPhone. I was actually pretty impressed, but since I am the benefactor of other W.E. hand-me-downs (PCI TV tuner, sling-box on loan, golf bag, laptop case) I would not be surprised if one day the iPhone is mine as well :)
.
As far as I can remember, I think I played solidly to get to the bubble. Down to 4, I'm short-stacked with I.B. even shorter. He shoves and I toss another t100 chip to call. I get lucky as my 23o beats his A2o. I finish 3rd. W.E takes the win and S.L. takes second. Both played well the entire night.
.
Game #3
A key hand came when I.B. raised from MP and I reraised all in with JJ in LP. I.B. goes into the tank and subjects me to his ominous stare down. I've personally seen casino sharks quake at this stare. He deliberates and calls with A3s. JJ holds up and I am chip leader. T.R. picks up AA in the BB twice but gets no action. I maintain the lead down to 2. First hand heads up M.B. gets an exposed K but insists on playing it. I have AT and call his BB, suspecting KK but hoping to see a flop. He shoves, I fold. Next hand he shoves with A9s but I pick up AQs which holds up for the win. Although the win will barely fill a tank of gas, it was nice to scoop up a few Andrew Jacksons while they are still in circulation, since J.S. tells us they will soon be replaced with Hillary Clintons.

Here's the summary for the night:

Game#2 1)W.E. 2)S.L. 3)R.W.
Game#3 1)R.W. 2)M.B. 3)T.R.

We usually chop when down to 2 in the interest of getting everyone back in a game, but tonight we played a few hands down to the winner, which we have not done in a very long time.
.
I returned home to watch Brett Favre beat the Broncs in overtime while playing with my one-year-old, who was waiting up for me to hear about my exploits. A great night out - thanks for letting me come guys!

The big talking point of the night was Lake Peigneur
.
Conshohocken Classic Poker Tournament
It seems that W.E. will start up his semi-annual MTT again. A very well run 32-40 person tournament. Hopefully he'll have the kinks worked out of the new Tournament Director software then. M.B. has graciously offered to host, so we eagerly await the details on this. I am a vastly different player than I was when I made the final table in 2006, so I'm curious to see how I'll do. Action S.H. actually won the inaugural event in 2004, so he's the one to beat.

October 15 2007
Our home game is soon approaching! It has been a long time since we last did battle. I'm really looking forward to it. My homeys are all quality people and very experienced players. Whether it's online or casinos, tournament or cash games, they are all successful players. It's a veritable poker school each month. Anyone can win any game on any night. It's the best SnG poker on the Main Line, IMHO.

I'll be posting some highlights from our SnGs here...
...and here they are. Short but meaningful...

Results: I bubbled games 1 & 2, chopped first in game 3.

Game Comments:
Game 1: A winning player must minimize his mistakes, particularly during the end game. One of the keys to bubble play is knowing your opponents' ranges. I failed, and it came back to bite me. I folded hands in which I had the short stack dominated, and this player eventually came back to defeat me on the bubble.
.
Game 2: Luck is just as much a part of the end game as skill. I widened my pushing range to be more aggressive in order to avoid another bubble finish. I ran into AK from each of my three opponents in the same orbit! My second-best hands were no match, and again I bubbled.
.
Game 3: A new player who has a very wide range bet an early hand aggressively and pushed me off of ATo and shows A3o. Later, I call his all-in with KK and run right into his AA. But the turn brings me a K for the win. In other action, I took down a nice pot early when my AhTh flushes on the turn. In another crucial hand, I pick up TT from the big blind but UTG raises 3xBB for almost his entire stack. He's committed, but why did he not shove? His range is wide, yet the bet seems suspicious. I ponder coming over the top, but decide to call. Flop comes Txx. I check, opponent shoves, I call and beat his A9o. Down to 4 I pick up AA in the big blind, which holds up. A few hands later I chop for first and go home. I think I made good decisions this game, but getting cards at the right time sure helps too.

General comments:
1. I.B. was on vacation in Europe. We look forward to him joining us again in November.
2. It occurred to me that the other guys consider me a complainer! I complain about bad beats, getting unlucky, and who knows what else. I'm a downer, I suppose because I'm not as successful as I'd like to be. I have known this about myself, but have been too lazy to do anything about it. I intend to address this, because if I can't be a better card player, I should at least strive to be a better person! Nothing like your peers thinking you're a belly-acher!
3. It's hard to justify putting a lot of time towards improving your game when there are a lot of other worth-while things in life that require time. This balance requires maturity and wisdom. I carve out some time for online play only after family and personal needs have been met. Some bloggers I follow are taking some time off to take a break and prioritize things. I respect that. Maybe I should do the same. I miss my late night soaks in my hot tub. What makes the home game so appealing is that, even though I just broke even for the night (a financial waste of time), I got to spend time with friends, something that men, husbands, and dads find hard to do.

My next home game is scheduled for October 29.

Recap November 2007

As I mentioned in a prior post, I'm training for the upcoming local bracelet event dubbed the Conshohocken Classic. We expect between 32-40 top players from this area. I've been training hard for this event. I'm at a big disadvantage to my younger foes online, as I can only hit the felt when my family's needs are met and in bed, so it means some late-ish nites for me. This week I managed to get some early starts at some MTTs sized about the same as the expected turnout for the Conshohocken Classic, and with good results: 7/8 final tables with 5 ITM finishes (still no wins).
.
11/24/07
Finished 2/27 ITM
Tonight, underdog hands did some real damage. One outcome was in my favor, the other two cost me first place. This beat really hurt because I really wanted to nail down an MTT first place.

A one-outer in my favor: http://www.pokerhand.org/?1736125
I reraise here because the table was playing back at all my standard raises with what seemed like ATC. I knew I was behind after his reraise, so I was clearly lucky here. I overplayed this PP but I was way ahead of the table's range. The flush draw on top made it a one-outer. OP was furious and went on a tirade afterwards. Soon afterwards, I got the best of him with these nice hands
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1736126 (note his chat)
and
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1736128

but down to heads up, this cost me first place: http://www.pokerhand.org/?1736220

and it's over with this: http://www.pokerhand.org/?1736235

I'm not enjoying playing at PokerStars. Rather than gripe about it here, I'll write up a more complete comparison with FullTilt in another post. But in short, I just don't see why so many players like it. That's NOT to say I won't accept an endorsement from them when I'm at the TV table of a WPT event!
.
11/27/07
I feel like I'm playing well - I get my chips in way good, only to lose to significant underdogs. At this point I can only keep plugging away and trying to incorporate my newly refined strategy.
.
11/28/07
Finished 3/45 ITM,
Played reasonably well. Early and middle games were pretty strong, end game was acceptable (which is a big improvement for me). Had two blind steals blow up on me (was played back at very strongly), and passed on two good opportunities to steal, otherwise I may have done better.
11/28/07
Finished 21/162 ITM 5-card draw (limit). I was in 4th pretty deep, but in 9th place, my son got ill in his sleep and I had to attend to him. I sat out until I was down to a couple big blinds. I was surprised I floated ITM. I haven't played this game in 25 years! It's the game I played most as a teen, and I admit I've forgotten how to think strategically. Correct that - I didn't think strategically back then either, so I'm learning now. But after such a long haitus, I'm really enjoying it. Chalk one up for PokerStars! My only issue is that the PL tournament is too early in the evening for me (there is no NL offered), and I don't enjoy limit, but I'm making an exception since I really like 5-card draw.
.
11/29/07
Final tabled 2 45-MTTs but did not place ITM. Very disappointed in this outcome. I played short-stack well (fought back to average) only to bust as the favorite in both tourneys. I lost an unhealthy amount of chips to resteals and OPs playing back at me, which seems to happen more and more as the average player is exposed more and more to teaching that advocates aggression. Players are simply willing to bust out with ATC, as long as they are being aggressive.
.
11/30/07
Finished 6/45 ITM when my AT lost to KJ. If I win that showdown, I'm back in it at a strong 3rd. The significance of this tourney was that I fought back from down to 790 very early. I played the short stack great, and my end game was pretty good. I definitely see some improvement taking place.

this week demonstrates that playing reasonably well still does result in profitability.

11/11 played the Sunday night CP forum private tourney. i was very happy with the quality of play, and i think i played well. one hand i think i should have called all in but i folded. i posted the hand for review by the forum gurus. we'll see what they say. i eventually bubbled at 4th when my AA was cracked by KK. i called the BB UTG knowing LP would raise. i bet out the flop and shoved the turn but was already beat by the flopped K. anyway i don't see a need to continue playing these CP tourneys, as the turnout is really low. i'd rather grind away at the 45s in preparation for the upcoming Conshohocken Classic.

11/8 returned from a Diwali feast in time to play my first CP forum private tournament. i've benefited from reading hand posts from those forums and have even started to follow some of their blogs, so i thought i would join them. it was a 6-max rebuy MTT but turnout seemed very low - i'll have to give it another try. i suppose my expectations were different. stakes were so low that it incentivized everyone to shove with wide ranges the first hour. the structure didn't incentivize anyone to play in the methodical & thoughtful way reflected in their forum posts. i knocked out one of my favorite posters - how ironic. i made it down to heads up and then gave my chips away to a well concealed KK played nicely by villain. i should have rethought that decision a little more, but i was tired and didn't want to agonize over it.

11/5 won 2 out of 3 heads-up matches. wasn't sure how long i would have to play this night so i chose heads up. might stick with this to see if i can make a run. i don't usually play heads up -not even in MTTs !

11/4 busted all five tourneys i entered. not even worth blogging about.

11/2 ITM 5/45

11/2 it looks like the Conshohocken Classic will be Jan 12 2008. More on this to come...

On Turning Pro

I applaud Shannon Shorr's candidness in his recent blog entry in which he talks about being a pro. Many pros admit to burnout and the need to enrich their lives with something other than playing cards.

Here is a snippet from Shannon's blog - please refer to the above link for it's proper context.

I thought I had what it takes to play poker professionally, but I'm starting to doubt myself. One thing is for sure. This game isn't for the weak. All of you kids who are thinking about dropping out of school and doing this...think again. Most of you will be done before you ever even get started. I'm not enjoying playing full-time one bit.

Here are some excellent thoughts to consider before turning professional: http://plan3tgongpoker.blogspot.com/2007/11/thoughts-on-becoming-poker-pro.html

and some very good thoughts about leaving poker as a profession:

Here I share my own personal thoughts on turning pro.

Pride goeth before destruction

I was out of town this weekend and drove past a firehouse that advertised a texas holdem tournament the third Saturday of every month. I checked my cell phone calendar as I drove by - sweet! I inquired within of the details - a five table tourney with a single add-on upon registration. A whopping 28% rake for the firehouse - high, but for a good cause, I reasoned! I had some free time, so I decided to enter.

I saw the usual hodge-podge of young hot-shots, donning the typical baggy pants, baseball caps, bling-bling, with girlfriend in tow. I was amazed at the turnout - young and elderly alike. I started to profile each one. "No way he's read Harrington" I mused. "For sure she's never even heard of Annette Obrestad," I jested. I smirked as I imagine myself as Fast Eddie Felson on a hustling road trip. "These people won't know what hit them."

I was delighted to see Tournament Director software in use, but I couldn't keep well-enough alone. I immediately started to give some advice to the organizer on how to run a better tournament. "You know, if you had two decks at a table, the other deck could be ready without taking time to shuffle between hands," I advised. "Oh it moves fast enough - 95% of the people here tonight play here every month," he replies.

I'm assigned a seat at table 1 in the cutoff and arrange my 5K stack. The very first hand I pick up AQo. MP limps, girl to my right limps, I raise 4bb, both call. Flop comes xxQ. Check, check, I c-bet, MP folds, girl calls. Turn blanks, girl bets 400. Hmmm. I slow down and call. River blank, girl bets 400, I call. She turns over KK. She slow-played KK on the very first hand. WHAT!!!!!! I'm down 1200 already.

I fold hands 2 & 3. Hand #3 is won by a guy across from me with AK who did not add-on. He added to his 2.5K nicely against EP A7o. Ah the weak Ace - exactly how I figured the tournament would be. I just know tight-aggressive will work here. I'm gonna win!!!!

Hand 4 I pick up KK UTG. Sweet - my 1200 is coming back home. I raise 2xBB. Guy across makes it 300 to go and it folds to me. I make it 1000. He goes all in. I think of Phil Gordon - "the 4th raise is Aces". Yeah but not in this rinky-dink firehouse. Not here. Not now. I remember my oath to always go broke with KK. I unashamedly call. His AA holds up and I'm out. I don't survive even a single orbit. I never post a blind. I never get to shuffle the cards. The great King of Prussia is really just the Joker of North East Maryland. It's a good thing they weren't using two decks - I would have busted out in half the time!

What a wretched, arrogant fool. The next time I'm taking the opposite approach - I'm curious to see where it gets me. Maybe there's something to be said for humility after all.

Recap October 2007

10/22 finished 6/45 in a MTT. Gave away my chip lead on this horrible read (took him for a bluff) http://www.pokerhand.org/?1620305. Also, I got AA, AK, AA nearly back-to-back-to-back, but no action. Grades: early A, middle B, end B+, short-stack C-, big-stack B.

10/24 working on attitude and perspective like I mentioned last week. Found this article helpful: http://www.pocketfives.com/EC4C1918-D1C2-4373-95F9-19FC7F541C23.aspx

10/25 finished 17/45 in a MTT. Played reasonably well. I was 8th when I busted. Pulled off a decent bluff here http://www.pokerhand.org/?1628718, but busted on this http://www.pokerhand.org/?1628754. Guess he played it well.

10/25 won a STT on the river, although I shouldn't have needed it: http://www.pokerhand.org/?1628956

10/26 bubbled a 2-table tourney on the usual bad beats. down to 5, i bust out on bubble with these bad beats:
bad beat #1: http://www.pokerhand.org/?1632249
bad beat #2: http://www.pokerhand.org/?1632255

10/15 played a home game, results and thoughts are below in a prior post. Got the hand history creator software working well enough to reconstruct a hand. I'm surprised the parser liked it as much as it did. The suits and stacks are not perfectly accurate, but the position and action is to the best of my memory. One such hand is here http://www.pokerhand.org/?1595039

10/16 forced myself to relax in the hot tub while my foes and homeys battled it out online.

10/17 played 2 STTs, busted both as the favorite. See hand history link for details.
10/17 finished 2/45 in a MTT. Played a little better mid and late. Lost some key showdowns to underdogs, didn't get action on some monsters, had some small pairs hold up to overs, and managed to sqeak out 2nd.

10/20 Got destroyed in everything. it all started after i tilted when one player was bullying the table with an incredible loose range and was hitting. against me he shoves against my AJo. Knowing the player is everything in poker - I knew I had him crushed. But LP pushes over the top. Squeezed and upset, I call. LP shows KK and the crushed opp a meager A9o. I bust out steaming over my own stubbornness. One doesn't improve at this game by allowing this to happen.
In the other tourneys I ran into huge opposition no matter what hand I had. Example: KcKh UTG, get called by two opps. flop 568h, all the chips go in. one opp flops the straight, the other the nut flush. Other examples, ran into AK with AQ and AJ. Also had some bluffs blow up on me.

Not a night to remember at all. Maybe I'll just take up wingsuit flying

Studying Some Good New Material

I'm still losing far more often than I'd like to. I have bubbled the last 3 out of 4 SnGs due to some bad luck after mounting some nice comebacks.

I've recently come across some material that I believe will help my game. I won't reference the sources here, but the material is available online and has likely been read already by my foes. I'll be trying these strategies in my next sessions, and the results will be posted here.

...well, so far no good results. Had some bad beats mow me down. I'll need to assess this new strategy over a longer term obviously.

...just finished a week of playing nightly. I had just 2 first place SnG finishes and some low ITM finishes in larger tournaments, so another losing week overall. I think I'm playing well, but the results just aren't there. The new strategy has helped a bit, but there's still a long way to go.

Casino Update Borgata 50K Guarantee

Borgata 9/28/2007 12pm NL Tournament

Excellent table/seat draw. Table 4 won't break until ITM, so i'll get a good look at my opps. Seat 7 not my fav 5 or 6, but good!

Started with 6k, have 6k at break 1. Card dead. Not even hitting flops i'm folding. Fun table.

Was moved to another table on a wierd rule. Table next to me went to 7,so they move the big blind at the nearest table (me). I was playing the old table really well. At new table i was way short stacked vs pro players. They ate me up. Short stack i push AJ, run into AA. I'm out.

Just bubbled a sng after having 60% of chips down to 4 and still managed to lose to 2 tourists. Very disappointed at this outcome. I was surely the best player at this level.

Busted out another sng. My streak of losing sessions continues.

In looking back, I'm seriously considering not visiting the Borgata any more. I have not had a winning session there to date. I don't think I can play at that level. Considering I've made the final table at the Showboat, I think I'll try those tournaments again.

Poker Camp, Baden, Austria, May 2006

I had been to Baden once before, and Austria is one of my favorite countries to vacation in, so the venue really appealed to me. We stayed at Schloss-Weikersdorf which was walking distance to Casino Baden .

Many attendees from North America won seats through events at a local casino (particularly Oregon). I was one of the few fish that paid his way.

Poker camp was a great experience and fun to attend. The teaching content was more basic than I expected, suffering from what seemed to be a "least-common-denominator" approach to accomodate all attendees. By far the greatest value was playing with pros and having the option to expose your cards for comment. Each pro was extremely intelligent and articulate. I learned the most from online SnG specialist Thomas Bihl from Germany. I came with a notebook of hand scenarios and he was kind enough to go through them with me.

This was also the venue of my first MTT ITM finish, although I know now that I played horribly near the bubble. The overall quality of play was quite good at both the MTT and SNG tournaments. I was too old and tired to stay up through the night playing ring games, but many attendees chose to do so.
